What is VoIP?
VoIP (voice over internet protocol) is quite simply a different way of making a phone call. VoIP phone calls work by breaking down our speech and transposing the segments of our voice into small IP 'packets', which are then transported over the internet.
The destination of a VoIP call could be another VoIP user, a landline or even a mobile. In the case of a landline or a mobile, the VoIP call is 'converted' along the way and so ends up as a 'traditional' phone call. You may be surprised to know that around 30% of UK call traffic is already being transported over VoIP backbone networks.
What is Hosted VoIP?
Hosted VoIP is an easier and quicker way of saying 'Hosted Telephony' or 'Hosted IP Phone System'. Essentially, it is an IP phone system that is hosted in a data centre. The users (extensions) of the system connect to it via a dedicated broadband link and are therefore using VoIP to talk to each other.
